蒙古国作为一个内陆路国家仅有两个邻国——中国和俄罗斯。由于历史原因，俄语很长一段时间都是蒙古国的第一外语，随着上世纪九十年代蒙古进行一系列政治、经济改革，推行亲西方的政策，英语成为蒙古第一大外语。今天，汉语已经成为仅次于英语、俄语的蒙古国第三大外语，并且保持强劲发展势头。伦扎目前是乌兰巴托育才学校孔子课堂的教导主任，已经学习了近20年汉语的他，对于蒙古出现的“汉语热”格外有感触，“蒙古全社会对汉语都特别热，举例说，1997年我考上人文大学汉语系，那时候我们全系总共有57个学生，包括上夜班的，他们是下午4点上课，加上他们总共才57个。但现在人文大学已经有230多个学生了，应该说很多人特别喜欢学习汉语，他们在工作当中，特别是商业这块儿最重要的，可以第一语言说就是汉语。”
20岁的卉雅接触汉语仅仅三个月，但是现在她不仅已经可以用汉语接受采访，还认真考虑要把汉语纳入到未来的人生规划中来，“我有打算去中国留学，学国际关系或者相关专业。我真喜欢汉语，喜欢学习汉语，所以我努力学习。在蒙古用汉语的工作很多，明年我打算去中国留学，所以我要学好汉语。”
已经在蒙古教了8年汉语的张玲对于卉雅能够在这么短时间内掌握汉语到这个程度并不意外，她说，蒙古学生在学习汉语时表现出的勤奋和认真时常令她感动，她给记者举了一个小例子，“在初级的时候，他们不太理解我的意思，我说每个生词写10遍就行了，但是有人写10行，一课的生词可能有20多个，我第一次改作业的时候都震惊到了。如果他们不愿意学习是不会写这么多的。虽然是理解上的错误，但是也能看出蒙古的学生是真的很刻苦”
蒙古国立大学孔子学院是蒙古国成立最早的孔子学院，8年多来已经累计培养学生7500人，院长朱军利说：“我们孔院的学员，最小的有六七岁的孩子，最大的有50多爷爷级的，有时候一个班里就有年龄跨度这么大的人，同时在学汉语，社会各界学汉语的都有。我们做过一项调研，目前在蒙古国各类学校里面学习汉语的学生有大约九千到一万人，同时在中国包括拿了奖学金去的和自费去的，在中国读书的学生也有8000多。我们知道蒙古国总人口只有300万，其中两万人在学汉语，这个比例还是比较高的。”
虽然目前汉语还不是蒙古国大学入学考试的必考科目，但是有很多家长依然不惜重金将孩子送到汉语、蒙语的双语学校，希望让下一代从小学好汉语。蒙古国规模最大、也是唯一一家独立的孔子课堂——乌兰巴托育才学校孔子课堂的负责人都仁吉日嘎拉每到招生的时候都很为难，因为平均每年不足百人的招生规模根本无法回应蒙古家庭期待孩子们学好汉语的高涨热情。都仁吉日嘎拉说：“现在蒙古的基础教育是免费的，比如说国立的小学、中学、高中都是免费的。但是好多家长把孩子送到私立学校，学费对于蒙古一个普通家庭还是挺高的，但是很多家长还是把孩子送到私立学校，希望孩子学好中文，有一个外语的基础。我们每年5月招生，现在每年都招两到三个班级。每到5月就好多家长来到我们学校，有的是托关系，我的是直接找校长，因为蒙古现在是汉语热，很多家长都希望把孩子送到中文学校。”
都仁吉日嘎拉说，目前在乌兰巴托英语双语学校不到10所，俄语学校更少，韩语、日语也就一两所，但是汉语学校却至少有20所，可即便如此，孔子课堂每年入学报名火爆的情形依然不改。
目前，中国是蒙古最大贸易伙伴，对华贸易占蒙古总体对外贸易的62%，学好汉语就等于找到好工作的想法，在蒙古已经深入人心，而在这一过程中，越来越多的蒙古青年人也开始接受和热爱中国文化。对此，中国驻蒙古大使邢海明说：“这些年中蒙关系发展的一个重要特点就是人文交流方兴未艾，这体现在人与人、心与心的接近。坦率地讲，还是俄语比较多，后来是英语。但是这些年，汉语在蒙古的传播方兴未艾，已经变成了蒙古的一种时尚。很多蒙古的年轻人以懂得汉语、学习汉语、有中国朋友为荣。现在大学、中学，甚至小学，都在开汉语的课程，学习汉语的热潮和学习汉语的劲儿是越来越好了。”
